History of Europe

Dissolution of the Warsaw Pact - is NATO now too powerful?

by Agnieszka Sterczewska, 2010

The Warsaw Pact - the Treaty of Friendship, Cooperation and Mutual Assistance. Rising treaty was supported by a declaration in Bucharest. Polish task was to ensure a smooth transition from the Red Army and the transport of supplies to Western Europe. Other members of the pact were the public in the socialist countries of Europe outside the Federative People's Republic of Yugoslavia. Members of Warsaw Pact had to defend one another in the event of an attack on one of them. UW was the main opponent of the NATO pact, formed in 1949.

The Warsaw Pact signed with during its existence, only one military operation - Operation "Danube". August 21, 1968 moved to intervene during the Prague Spring in Czechoslovakia. But that was not the intervention of the Agreement itself, but only five of its members - the GDR, Bulgarian, Hungarian, Polish and the Soviet Union, in this way was filled with so-called. Brezhnev doctrine is well-known doctrine of "limited sovereignty". It said that in the countries of the Warsaw Pact has a limitation of sovereignty of the Member States to promote the interests of the socialist community, which participated in the intervention ZSRR.W 750 000 soldiers, 6,300 tanks and 800 aircraft. It is estimated that killed about 200 people. This indicates that the doctrine of foreign policy was just a propaganda operation. At the summit in Bucharest in 1989 decided to move away from the Brezhnev doctrine. After changes in the years 1989-1990, Member States have decided that the Agreement countries stationed in the Soviet army should leave the territory. 25 February 1991 in Budapest, Hungary signed an agreement to cease military cooperation under the Agreement on 1 July 1991 in Prague resolved political structures. This meant the final liquidation of the Warsaw Pact.
Participation of the Soviet bloc in the Warsaw Pact was deadly for their budgets. Currently, it is very evident in the countries that once belonged to this organization
Because a large part of the production were arms plants, which formed an outdated military equipment for the needs of Member States. The Warsaw Pact aroused great respect NATO commanders. It was felt, often exaggerated, that it has a high level of readiness, a good level of training of troops and modern weapons. After the invasion Pact troops into Czechoslovakia in 1968, the Military Commander of seven U.S. Army Gen. JH Polk acknowledged that this was a military operation, "class", well organized and coordinated, properly masked and fast. Note, however, the NATO pact is considered the main enemy of the Warsaw Pact.

In my view, we see the current weakness of NATO. This is supported by the example of the lack of ability to overcome and end of war with a group of terrorists in Afghanistan. Also words of the President of Russia, the enlargement of NATO to the east is a threat to his country, "we can also take the ironic. You could say that Moscow is returning to the well-known rhetoric of the Cold War, with a present day much greater threat to NATO.

The truth is that the current strength or weakness of NATO, in a few years will evaluate the story.
